The Session met on October 21, 2007. Items discussed and acted upon include:
1.) As always in prayer the concerns and joys of members are remembered.
2.) Christian Education is building up many good and new ideas. Did you see the “old elephant” children’s sermon? See elsewhere in the newsletter, on the bulletin board and in church announcements.
3.) Evangelism & Outreach has a full program with Heritage Sunday on October28, and the upcoming Hanging of the Greens on December 9 and the annual Caroling Party on December 21.
4.) Personnel recommended 3% increase to staff members. That also includes Dr. DeYoung in housing and salary.
5.) Property is sprucing up the conference room.
6.) Stewardship, in conjunction with Dr. DeYoung’s sermon, will be sending a letter about pledging. Think and pray about this in your pledge decision.
7.) Worship is planning the church decorations for the advent season.
There will be a congregational meeting on November 4 to elect new officers for the next term(s).

Four women from our church – Margaret Knapp, Margaret Lynn, Irene Mitchell and Mary Weber – attended the Fall gathering of Presbyterian Women for Transylvania Presbytery last Saturday, October 20. Burnamwood greeted us with clean air, blue skies, and an array of fall colors. Inside, the dining room was also decked out in fall colors with golden programs for the day and mums as the centerpiece on each table.
Gloria Moorman, moderator of Presbyterian Women for Mid-Kentucky Presbytery, (Louisville) was the guest speaker for the day. Her topic was “Thinking Outside of the Circle,” and she encouraged us to be intentional in welcoming new women to our group. After Gloria spoke, we broke into smaller groups for discussion of the responsibilities of each of the leaders of Presbyterian Women.
As we left, we heard comments like, “That was the best meeting ever!” and “I can’t wait to go to another one!” EVERY WOMAN is welcome to join us in our meetings here at the Church. Kate Riker Circle meets at 10:30 a.m. on the first Monday of each month in the dining room. This year we are studying “Above and Beyond – Hearing God’s Call in Jonah and Ruth.” Please join us on November 5 when Marilyn Allen will lead our study on Lesson 3, “Taking Up Space in a Fish Named Grace.” It is a study of Chapter 2 of Jonah.

Several things come to mind for this month:
1.) Last week you received a letter about the 2008 financial commitment which we are being asked to make to the church. Please consider your gift, and bring (or mail) your pledge card to the church by Sunday, November 11.
2.) A couple of months ago we were celebrating the good attendance which we had during the summer. The past month did not warrant that same celebration – WE MISSED YOU! With a new month – we look forward to seeing you in church!
3.) Several of you have commented about the recent newspaper article, “Schism widening in Presbyterian Church.” This is nothing new, we have been struggling with this since the 1970’s. Two reasons were listed: one had to do with “new leeway” in ordination requirements for clergy and lay officers. The requirements have NOT CHANGED. The second reason listed had to do with “alternative phrasings for the divine Trinity.” For years we have said we need to broaden our understanding of God with other words, but that the names “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit” remain language which defines God. In discussing this, the Session realized that the way all of this was reported was what we might call “irresponsible” reporting.
4.) Lastly, as was announced in worship on October 28th, the Session has voted to renew the Interim Covenant Agreement between myself and the UPC of Harrodsburg for up to another year. The work of an Interim Pastor is approved by Presbytery for 12 months. Can you believe we have been together for 12 months – one year? How time flies when you’re having fun! The new agreement is for 12 months, or until a new Pastor is called. 2008 will be an exciting time, and I look forward to our work together.
Shalom/Peace,
Art
“Lee Charlton and family thank those who attended visitation and the Memorial Service in honor of William Ewart Charlton, as well as those who remembered us with food, cards, calls, memorial gifts, and other expressions of sympathy. Bill enjoyed United Presbyterian Church and appreciated the friendliness of its members and enjoyed participation in such activities as the service when he wore his kilt. He had a strong faith.”
Our sincere appreciation,
Lee C. Charlton
