Want to experience life under the “Big Tent”? The Big Tent will bring together a number of PCUSA groups and conferences into one place at one time, all with common meals and worship, some common workshop sessions, and a final Saturday evening celebration event in Atlanta’s Centennial Park. The Big Tent has been called “a denominational happening” and “a big Presbyterian family reunion.” Big Tent will inspire you and make you proud to be Presbyterian. The groups and conferences involved are: Healthy Ministry Conference, the Presbyterian Communicators’ Network Conference, the National Multicultural Church Conference, the Stewardship and Investment Conference, the Evangelism and Church Growth Conference, the National Elders Conference, the Peacemaking Conference, the PHEWA Social Justice Biennial Conference, the Racial Ethnic Convocation and the New Immigrants Ministries Convocation. There will be a Children’s Program and a Youth Program, covering ages 6 months through 12th grade, so the whole family can enjoy the festivities. Conferences run from approximately June 11th-13th, and will take place in Atlanta, GA. The early registration deadline is MARCH 9th, so now is the best time to register. For more information, go to http://www.pcusa.org/bigtent/ or check out the poster outside of the church office. The final registration deadline is April 30th. This promises to be a great event!
We are going electronic! In a move to conserve more resources, both financial and environmental, we are going to start sending out our monthly church newsletter by email to all of our members and friends who have email addresses. By doing this, we estimate savings of at least $300 per year, and potentially much more! We will still print hard copies to mail to those without email addresses, or to any who prefer to receive a paper copy. If we have an email address for you, we will automatically start sending you an email version of the newsletter unless you request otherwise. We will do a full March Newsletter mailing and transition to paper and electronic in April.
Going electronic will save resources, time, and money. It also means you don’t have to wait on the Post Office to get your newsletter, and we can add unlimited recipients to the email newsletter at no additional cost! We will also be able to incorporate pictures and other graphics, links to information online, and other improvements to make the newsletter even more helpful and informative. Thanks for your help as we go through this transition!
We welcome Harrodsburg Christian and United Methodist Churches to United Presbyterian Church for an Ash Wednesday service at 7pm. This service marks the start of our season of Lent, and we hope you are able to join us for this special service. Child care will be provided.
The Lenten Bible Study Group will start next week, March 3rd and 4th. We still have some books available for purchase for $10.95. You can contact the church office if you would like to buy one. The books include daily devotions, so even if you are unable to join us for the Bible Study, you can join with us in Spirit each day. Please make checks out to United Presbyterian Church with “Lenten Book” in the memo line.
Next Saturday we will be heading out to the Louisville Zoo! If you would like to go but have not signed up yet, please do so on the bulletin board outside of the Church Office. We will take the church van and will also need one or two additional cars to join the caravan. Please meet at the church for a 9 AM departure! We should arrive by 10:30, and have some time to wander around before lunch. The cost of admission is $5 per person. Please plan on bringing some money for lunch, as well, or packing a lunch to enjoy at the zoo. The zoo has quite a bit to see both indoors and outdoors, so the trip will be on rain or shine, as long as road conditions are safe. Please make sure to dress accordingly for the weather!
Due to the snow makeup day on February 16th, the Youth Lock-In will be rescheduled for later in the spring. Please watch for more details.
Is your retirement nest egg scrambled? The Presbyterian Church of Danville invites us to join them for two presentations led by 3 different experts from 3 different organizations. Tuesday, Feb. 3rd Tom Tye will speak, and Tuesday, Feb. 10th, Valery McMann and Alan Turbyfill will give a presentation. The three speakers are all different ages and bring different perspectives, and have been asked to bring us the advice that they give their parents and/or children in these tough financial times.
The programs start at 7pm and both take place in the Chapel. If you have any questions, contact Jim Fischer at 236-2940.
